On Tuesday, August 7, 2018, the South St. Paul Mayor's Youth Task Force will kick off the 18th Annual “Fill the Backpack" Campaign for students in need at the local schools in South St. Paul. Here’s how it works.
The SSP Mayor’s Youth Task Force has received a generous donation from the Mizpah Lodge #191 to purchase backpacks. The Task Force is asking neighborhoods, organizations, groups, or individuals to purchase school supplies to fill the backpacks. Bring your donations to the South St. Paul City Hall and place in the barrel located in the lobby. Once the backpacks are filled, they will be given to the schools to distribute to the students in need in the SSP School District so ALL students can start the school year off with a filled backpack! See attachment for list of items needed.
South St. Paul Night to Unite is just a few days away. Over 40 neighborhoods are planning celebrations, spending the evening outdoors with their neighbors. Teams from the SSP Police, Fire, City Staff, School Board, School staff, Miss South St. Paul and SSP princesses, and more are looking forward to visiting the neighborhood parties all over South St. Paul.
In addition, the South St. Paul Mayor’s Youth Task Force will be kicking off the 18th Annual Fill the Backpack Campaign. Many of the Neighborhood parties will be collecting schools supplies. The Task Force is looking to fill 200 backpacks for students in need at the South St. Paul schools. The list of supplies is attached.

Ninety eight years ago, South St. Paul women became the first in the nation to vote legally following ratification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution. This month, two very special events are planned to commemorate that event and also to present the third annual Pass the Torch Award to a woman or organization involved in promoting women's voting rights.
This year's event is at the Suffrage Memorial on the grounds of the Minnesota State Capitol in St. Paul, August 26. Then on August 27, the actual anniversary of the vote, an art illumination event will be held at Luther Memorial Church where you can come in and light a candle in memory of one of the 87 local women who voted on the morning of August 27, 1920.
