[ARCHIVED] Women Get the Vote

Image of a picture of the Women Get The Vote

On August 27, 1920, South St. Paul held a special waterworks bond election. This election is historic because it was the first election held after the ratification of the 19th Amendment on August 26, 1920, which gave women the right to vote.  At 6:00 AM on the morning of August 27th, Marguerite Newburgh cast the first vote at the South St. Paul City Hall, making her the first woman in the United States to vote!

This year marks the 100th Anniversary of this historic election.  Events are being held throughout the year to mark this anniversary.  One such event include the presentation Women Get the Vote by local historian Lois Glewwe.  To learn more about this historic event watch the presentation Women Get the Vote.
